The Central County Fire Department is a participating agency of the Central San Mateo County Training Division. The Central San Mateo County Training Division (CSMCTD) provides Fire, Emergency Medical, and Special Operations training for 7 different cities which are covered by 6 different fire departments. Central County Fire Department houses the offices for the CSMCTD at the Fire Administration Headquarters at 1399 Rollins Road in Burlingame. The CSMCTD is a “Shared Service” model that was officially created in 2010. Prior to 2010, smaller agreements were in place between Burlingame, Hillsborough, Millbrae and San Mateo. Today the Training Division covers Belmont, Burlingame, Hillsborough, Foster City, Millbrae, San Bruno, and San Mateo.
Currently there are four training officers and one administrative assistant in the Training Division. Deputy Fire Chief Kevin McWhirter, a City of Millbrae employee, who spent the majority of his career as a member of the Millbrae Fire Department, is supervisor of the Training Division. Division Chief John Kammeyer, a Central County Fire Department employee, is the EMS Chief responsible for the records management, quality assurance, quality improvement, and training for the Training Division. Battalion Chief Bruce Barron, a Central County Fire employee, is responsible for Fire Operations Training for the Division. Captain Jeff Baker, a Central County Fire Department employee, is responsible for Special Operations Training.
The Training Division was merged to improve the operation consistency of our fire department with our neighbors. It has proven to be very successful, economically effective and a model for other agencies in the county. We continue to put a high emphasis on training for our Fire Fighters. Many intended benefits have been realized through the merging of our training efforts. We hope to continue this effort in other areas of our department.
